YOUNG Farmers from all over England and Wales made their way to the Royal Agricultural Centre at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, to take part in stockjudging competitions at the European Dairy Event.

The competitions being held that day were the National Stockman of the Year Final, the National Young Stockjudge of the Year Final and Finals for Dairy Stockjudging in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior categories.

Hannah Talbot, from Cutnall Green YFC, represented Worcestershire in Young Stockjudge of the Year and took third place.

The HSBC-sponsored event saw 17 YFC members from counties across England and Wales compete for the challenging title.

The competitors, who were aged 18 or under on 1 September 2003, had to judge four rings of livestock containing four dairy cows, four beef breeding cows, four commercial breeding ewes and four butcher's pigs.

They then had to present their reasons for placing each ring of livestock and complete an animal health and husbandry questionnaire.

HSBC agricultural banking manager Tom Chapman said: "It was very rewarding to see the enthusiasm and level of skill demonstrated by all the competitors.

"HSBC is delighted to support this competition, which epitomises the excellent opportunities NFYFC provides its members."

Tim Jordan, of Inkberrow YFC, represented the county in the Junior Dairy Stockjudging competition.
