DURING our September meeting Linda stood in for our president, read the minutes and introduced our speaker for the evening, David Cole.
David is a member of the Inn Sign Society and told us a fascinating story of public houses and the meaning of their signs. The first pubs go back to Roman times when the symbol was a bush. A picture of a bush may still be seen on signs today. The Red Lion, one of the most common names, has connections with James I, who insisted that all pubs had this sign. The Crown Inn was also a sign of loyalty to the monarchy. Other themes included religion, the constellations, local trades, travel (either by coach and horse, canal or rail), plus many others.
Our evening was brought to a close when David was asked to judge the oddest pub sign competition. The winning sign was won by Greta with The Falling Stone. We all wish Linda well in her new home and will miss the input she has given us together with her friendliness.
