A MAJOR cash boost is being earmarked for Bromsgrove library to start a new chapter - but it may not be enough for a happy ending.
Visitors can offer their views on how the library could be improved before work gets underway, says Cathy Evans, Worcestershire County Council's library services manager.
"We are committed to having a quality library on the Stratford Road site in Bromsgrove, even though there was talk of relocating the library as part of the schools' PFI deal," she said.
"Having transformed the children's area, we will now be moving on to update the adult section to make the library more welcoming and accessible."
She added: "We want to get moving with this as soon as possible, although we're still taking customers' views on board as to how we can further improve."
Tim Marshall, community library manager, said the work needed may cost more than the initial allocation, which could run into tens of thousands of pounds.
"It will make a decent start but it may not be enough to do all that's needed," he said.
"We will try and replace as much as possible and if people have a view we will be happy to listen to ideas."
He said part of the work would involve replacing the wooden shelving and counter but the materials used would be a question of how much cash was available. The actual figure is not being released until tenders have been received.
Other libraries in the area are also under discussion. A replacement for Alvechurch was also under consideration as part of the PFI scheme and Cofton Hackett is also looking for a new home.
"As far as Cofton Hackett is concerned, while we are looking at ways of maintaining the current building, we are also exploring other sites for relocation, including some in Barnt Green," Cathy Evans said.
"Members of the local community are always telling us when new opportunities are arising, so we're confident that if we did move the library, it would be with the blessing of residents."
