WILLIAM Hemming, needlemaker, of Astwood Hill, Astwood Bank, was charged with being drunk on Astwood Hill on October 3rd.
Police Constable Porter stated he was in plain clothes and saw the defendant, who was very drunk and staggering about on the road.
He spoke to him and told him he was drunk and he replied: "You are a gentleman; shake hands with me."
Defendant said it was the first time he had been there.
He had been out for a drive during the day and had more than was necessary.
He was very sorry and asked the Bench to be as lenient as they could.
Defendant, who Supt Hayes said had never come before the court before, was fined 2s 6d and 5s 6d costs.
