ALL the fun of the fair came to Alcester to uphold a town tradition last week. The annual Mop Fair was formally opened by High Bailiff Keith Tomlinson, one of his last duties before standing down from the post. He had to read the historical proclamation before allowing the eager school-children onto the rides.
It seemed a long wait for the youngsters, who are traditionally allowed some free rides at the opening ceremony, but a necessary one. For the reading of the proclamation is a binding requirement and if it is not read each year, there can be no more mops.
Everyone had a good time and by Wednesday morning there was no trace of the travelling fairground, which will return in October next year.
