GOALKEEPING legend Peter Shilton chatted to fans and signed copies of his new book during a visit to Worcester.

The autobiography by the former England great describes his amazing career in top-flight football, which spanned more than two decades, as well as the lows he suffered during the 1990s when he became embroiled in gambling and financial problems.

Shilton met his fans yesterday at Ottakar's Bookshop, in City Arcade, where he also took the time to sign football memorabilia brought to the store.

"There was a really good crowd and he spoke to everyone," said Simon Drakeford, events manager at the bookstore.

"People brought in everything from footballs and photographs to old sticker albums for him to sign - and he looked a bit different in some of those."

With 125 international appearances, Peter Shilton is England's most capped player and widely regarded as the country's best ever goalkeeper.

At club level, he made 1,390 first-class appearances, following his league debut for Leicester City as a 16-year-old.

His most successful spell in club football came under the late Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest with whom he won the European Cup in 1979 and 1980.
