FORMER pub landlady Doris Green, who ran the Red Lion at Cookley with her husband for 30 years, has died.

And the village church of St Peter's was packed last Wednesday as people said farewell to the popular 83-year-old who was brought up in the pub trade.

She grew up at The Anchor pub in nearby Caunsall, which was run by her father Ralph Barker and took the Red Lion in 1955 with her husband Francis, known as Jim.

The couple raised three children there - Malcolm, Peter and Janet.

The Anchor has been in the family for about 70 years and has been run by Peter since his grandfather retired.

Doris and Jim moved into Lionfields Road - round the corner from the pub - when they retired in 1985 and Jim died six years later.

Peter, 60, said his mother had remained fit and well until five weeks before her death when she developed a chest infection and breathing difficulties.
