CHARITABLE rugby fans are hoping to put Worcester Warriors on top of the league as they attempt to raise more money than fans of any other Premiership side.

Six avid supporters are preparing for the club's biggest derby game in years tomorrow by walking 16 miles from British Camp, Malvern, to Sixways, in time for kick-off against Gloucester.

The fund-raising trek was inspired by fans of Northampton Saints, who last year launched a campaign to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Their efforts caught the imagination and will be mirrored by Warriors supporters, who have already pledged more than £1,250 for the cause.

Led by season-ticket holder and fan website designer John Phillips, the group will leave Malvern at around 7am and expect to reach Sixways for 1pm, collecting money as they go.

"We are currently second in the fund-raising table, behind the Leicester Tigers," said the father-of-three, from Stuart Rise, Red Hill, Worcester.

"We are hoping to have more than £1,500 by Saturday and in thanks a Northampton Saints fan will become a Warrior for the day.

"It would be great to raise the most money because it's a good cause, and it's also about Worcester really being part of the Premiership."

The charity bid has also developed great camaraderie between fans from all teams as e-mail correspondence and friendly banter has built up over the past three weeks.
