Congratulations on your 'Opinion' editorial in the Ledbury Reporter, October 8. I am sure it will reflect accurately the feelings of a majority of Ledburians.
As a regular user of the library, I am very sympathetic to the needs of those who cannot access the building, but Herefordshire Council, if it is as efficient as it claims to be, should have forseen this situation. The space was only barely adequate for the town ten years ago, before the development of New Mills, never mind the newly implemented access laws.
I seem to recall that on at least two occasions in the past few years your newspaper has reported that Herefordshire is commissioning a survey into the conversion of the Master's House into a library.
If the council is as worried about being prosecuted as it seems to be, judging by the knee-jerk reaction, then perhaps it is because, as so often is the case, plans are easier to announce than deeds to implement and nothing has been done?
The library, thanks to the quality of the staff, offers Ledbury far more than the space at its disposal.
It is more than high time that Ledbury has something of which to be proud. Perhaps the £40,000 proposed for the temporary building on the much-needed parking space could be put towards minimal alterations to the Master's House.
Don Swinton, Challenger Close, Ledbury.
