THE future of one of Upton's most distinctive landmarks was secured, reported the Gazette 25 years ago.
Malvern Hills District Council agreed to take over the old bell tower - also known as the Pepperpot - and immediately spend £5,000 on work to preserve its interior.
However, that would not be the end of the council's financial commitment: a further £15,000 would be needed to restore the building's exterior. The approval was not unanimous. Two councillors opposed the move because the council was, at that time, supposed to be cutting back its spending.
Coun Douglas Ratcliffe said the council faced the danger of becoming "a receptacle for old buildings which other people don't want". But the majority felt it would be a "crime" and "gross vandalism" not to support the restoration.
