STAFF at a blossoming confetti company are blooming happy after planting themselves in the record books with their enormous Union Jack flower flag.

Glenn Robinson, farm manager at The Real Flower Petal Confetti Company - based at Wyke Manor Farm, near Pershore - planted the one million or so bulbs, which made up the flag, this spring in a field behind the manor building.

And the company - which produces more than 7,000 "pints" of biodegradable confetti annually - was overjoyed this week to hear its efforts had been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records.

It took Mr Robinson two days to plant the 7,540 square metre blanket of vivid white, blue and red annual delphiniums using conventional farm machinery.

And the flag - which stunned visitors to the farm during the summer months - smashes the previous record for the world's largest carpet of flowers - 2,040 square metres - achieved by the Dubai Shopping Festival, in Dubai, in February 2003.

"Obviously we're very pleased that we've got into the Guinness Book of Records," said Mr Robinson.

"The idea actually came as we were having a discussion about what we could do as something of interest for people who come to visit.

"At the time, I didn't realise it would be the largest ever, but that's how it worked out.

"We'll see if we can now achieve something better in the future."

The biodegradable confetti company has been running for about eight years and is the brainchild of owner Charles Hudson, who took inspiration from a petal falling from a tree.

The company is part of the farming partnership H&R Hudson, which has been running since 1947.
