A POSTER scheme to prevent people being intimidated by "trick or treat" youngsters has been launched by police.
Police and the Neighbourhood Watch Association have published a "No Trick or Treat" poster for people who do not want to take part in what is becoming a traditional Hallowe'en activity.
The poster can be displayed on windows or doors warning trick or treaters not to call at the property.
Malvern Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Clive Marlow said that for many elderly people Halloween really was frightening.
Distressing
"Some elderly people who would prefer not to have calls by trick or treaters can put the posters up," he said.
"It's not intended to stop trick or treating, it's more to protect some people who may find it distressing, or do not fully understand it."
Malvern Age Concern spokesman George Waugh welcomed the scheme. "I'm all for something like this," he said. "In principle it's a tremendous idea. Anything that deters people from causing stress to the elderly is good news."
Police spokesman PC John Westlake said: "The police are not trying to stop young people having fun.
"All we're asking is that they do it in a responsible way and respect the wishes of those who do not want to join in."
However, the police are currently waiting for a new supply of the posters which will become available at towards the end of next week, and these will be available for collection from police station front counters at Worcester, Droitwich, Evesham, Malvern and Pershore.
