Leslie Choules, son of Mr. Harry Choules, of Bridge Street, Pershore, did a very plucky action last week which is worthy of mention. Tommy Kings, a chubby-faced precocious little chap, was playing with other boys on the river bank on the Mill Meadow near the town when he rolled down the embankment into the water, and the stream carried him away. Leslie, attracted by the alarm raised by the boys, jumped into the river without a moment's hesitation, and succeeded in getting the lad to the side, where they were both assisted out. Kings was attended by Nurse Bolt from the Cottage Hospital, and it was some time before he fully recovered.

A ceremonial burning of ration books on the Ox roasting fire will be one of the highlights at the Drakes Broughton flower show and ox roast tomorrow. The event is being organised by the Drakes Broughton Village Hall Committee as part of their efforts to raise funds. Villagers have clubbed together to contribute fuel for the fire and a collection of ration books was made at the same time. These cannot be used to light the fire as this will be done at about 6am, but will be saved up and thrown carefully on to the flames later in the day.

Although incomes have kept pace with the retail prices index over the past five years, house prices have not and are continuing to rise in an effort to catch up. House prices today are 33.7 per cent higher than they were a year ago. The rise in the last quarter, of 7.7 per cent, is the highest for some time, a report adds. In the past three months the average price being paid for property by first-time buyers is £17,160 compared with the national average of £16,519.
