The annual meeting of the Governors of Evesham Hospital was held at the Town Hall, Evesham, on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. E. W. Beck (chairman of the Hospital Committee) presided. There was a small attendance and commenting on this the Chairman said it showed there were no complaints as to the way the institution was being managed. The Chairman also explained that the minutes of the last meeting were taken from the "Evesham Journal's" report, and these were adopted without comment. The Chairman said the splendid result of Gala Week enabled the committee to wipe out the deficit on the Extension Fund Account and to face the further extensions contemplated two years ago but held in abeyance for financial reasons.

Five human skeletons and some interesting Saxon objects were unearthed during the week-end at Beckford. Mr. B. G. Cox, hon. Secretary of the Vale of Evesham Historical Society, reports that five burials were found and that there is little doubt that there must be many more in the vicinity. The Evesham Police received a report on Saturday that human remains had been uncovered by mechanical excavators working on the Gloucestershire Sand and Gravel Co. Ltd.'s pits at Carrant Brook, Beckford. Inspector G. A. Young paid a visit, and bronze brooches which had been found with the bones were shown to the archaeologist, Mr. A. Moray Williams, of Beckford, who identified them as Saxon.

The number of people on the Wychavon council housing waiting list has jumped from a total of 1,142 last year to 1,291 this year, according to the latest figures issued by the housing department. The main rise has been in the number of single people wanting accommodation, and what the council calls "insurance cases" - people who are presently adequately housed and do not require immediate accommodation. The annual review of the house waiting list shows that since Wychavon came into being in 1974, the number of people requiring accommodation has dropped by 568. Mr. P. Asquith, deputy housing manager, said: "A lot of people put their names on the waiting list just in case they need a council house."
