The severe cold of last week continued over the week-end and, as severe conditions were general until Thursday, when there seemed indications that a complete thaw was imminent. Skating was general throughout the district, and unfortunately there were several accidents, although no fatalities have occurred. The ice on the Avon at Evesham above the Evesham weir presented an animated scene until Wednesday, but after that day the ice became dangerous. The lowest temperature was recorded on the 15th when the sheltered thermometer fell to 11 degrees, but the exposed thermometer registered 1 degree (31 degrees of frost).

It has been agreed that there shall be a carnival week in Evesham again during the summer and that the proceeds shall be devoted to brightening the lot of local hospital patients. A committee was set up at a public meeting at Wallace House last Thursday; and Coun. W. F. Kimberley was asked to act as chairman, and Miss Jean Haynes as hon. secretary. This they agreed to do and also to call a meeting soon at which planning should begin. In agreeing that the aim should be to provide patients in the Evesham hospitals with comforts and amenities not provided by the National Health Service, the committee expressed the hope that this would result in the fullest possible collaboration throughout the Vale, as the hospitals serve people from all the villages as well as the town.

Wychavon's housing committee agreed on Tuesday night to spend £3,000 in the coming financial year to provide play equipment on a controversial play area in Bewdley Street, Evesham. For the past two years the piece of land has been run as an adventure playground by a group of volunteers, but last year it closed earlier than anticipated because of lack of support from parents, and vandalism. The housing committee was in favour of spending the money to put in conventional equipment, which will be of the rustic type. It will consist of swings and a climbing frame.
