The annual dinner in connection with Pershore Co. 2nd V.B. Worcester Regiment was held at the Three Tuns Hotel when a good company sat down. Proposing "Success to the Pershore Company of Volunteers," General Davies said there were two things which the volunteers should go in for; one, of course, was shooting and the other discipline in the company. If they did not learn discipline at home they were not likely to be nearly so efficient when in actual warfare. It was evident they had in Col. Dixon a man who was a capital shot and who would be sure to take an interest in the shooting and to do all he could to make them as efficient as possible.

The sixth annual ball of the Evesham Rugby Football section of the Evesham Sports Club was held in the Public Hall on Friday evening and was a complete success from start to finish. The floor was crowded with dancers, over 200 being present, and dancing was carried on energetically until the small hours to the strains of Leslie Taylor's Miami Band (Birmingham). Supper was served at the Town Hall and thanks are due to the very capable ladies committee who so ably catered for the "inner man." After supper a demonstration of modern ballroom dancing was given by Miss Gladys Barnes and Mr. Barry Field. The balloons released during the evening added an extra festive touch and the whole evening went off without a hitch.

Not only have Bretforton Silver Band paid for its new uniforms, it has £100 in the bank. This was announced with pride at the band's annual meeting, held in the Memorial Hall. Mr. Stan Archer presided after being re-elected bandmaster. Mr Archer said the band was in a much better position than a year ago and he thanked everyone who had helped it. The response to the fete appeal was magnificent and reflected the esteem in which the band was held in the village, he said. In his report, the hon. Secretary (Mr. D. W. Straine) said the band had decided for financial reasons not to enter contests. Now it was hoped the band would enter competitions again and, as in the past, achieve nation-wide publicity.

A petition calling for a quick start on Evesham's promised by-pass was presented by Mr M. R. Hewitt, chairman of Evesham Chamber of Commerce, to Mr Michael Spicer, MP, on Saturday. Mr Spicer was told that it represented the feelings of 1,400 people whose signatures were collected in shops and offices throughout the town in a period of three weeks. The response to the petition was spontaneous. Mr Spicer was told it represented only the tip of the iceberg "of the overwhelming demand there is in this town and the surrounding villages for an early solution to our intolerable traffic conditions." Mr Spicer said he sympathised with the Chamber's campaign and assured members that he would present it to the Minister.
