FARMERS and gardeners have to put up with a great deal of annoyance and loss from those who apparently have little knowledge or regard for the law of property, and who are continually, in the course of their walks, appropriating fruit and vegetables, of no great value in itself on each occasion, but a serious matter when it is engaged in by so many. A case in point came before the Evesham bench on Monday, when two Evesham women were convicted of stealing potatoes. One of them seemed to think it was an excuse when she said she had only taken a boiling, and it was the first time they had taken any. They, and perhaps others too, will know better for the future.

THOSE in any way associated with the Evesham Hospital Gala Week had every reason to be gratified with the result of their efforts when a financial report was laid before a public meeting on Monday night. A sum of nearly £2,300 was available for the Hospital Extension Fund, and those "dismal Jimmies" who foretold disaster when a week's gala was contemplated were gratifyingly proved to be wrong. . It must not, however, be imagined that the result, excellent thought it was, has solved all the financial problems before the Hospital Executive Committee. With increased accommodation, the need for an increased regular income becomes manifestly obvious.

KEEN interest was taken by all attending the opening night of the 4th Worcestershire (Evesham/Pershore) Home Guard Battalion Rifle Club at Pershore Drill Hall on Thursday evening. The club is open to all enrolled and reserve members of the Home Guard and to reservists of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force and to adult members of the Army Cadet Force. Highlight of the evening was a "grouping" sweep which Major J. E. Newman, of Cropthorne, won by a narrow margin.

FEARS that priority for a by-pass in Evesham will diminish if Davies Road, the spine road across the Four Pools Estate, is opened were expressed at a public meeting in Evesham on Monday. Five hundred people attended the meeting, and most of them opposed the opening of the road. Of the 31 people who spoke at the meeting, most came out against the opening of the road which they claimed would cause a safety and noise hazard. The meeting had been called by Wychavon as a result of a petition containing 380 signatures handed in a month ago. Another petition with 109 signatures was handed in on Monday from the Woodlands area.
