A special service was held at St Andrew's Church, Pershore, on Thursday week for the purpose of inaugurating a society for young men and lads, to which the name of Guild of the Avon has been given. The object of the Guild is the promotion of clubs for boys as they leave school, as a junior section, and for young men in a senior section, in the town and villages of the neighbourhood, and in uniting them into one society pledged to do its best for its members both spiritually and morally, as well as intellectually and physically.

The Baptist Schoolroom, Evesham, presented a picturesque and animated appearance on Wednesday afternoon when a bazaar was held in aid of church funds and mission work. The function met with the undoubted success it deserved and long before the opening ceremony the room was crowded. The Rev. E. E. Thomas, B.A. (pastor) presided at the opening ceremony. During the afternoon selections were played by the "Arcadians," and Miss N. Bayliss, A.T.C.L., and Mr. L. Randall gave violin and pianoforte duets.

"Although our numbers are smaller this year, we have maintained the high standard of our predecessors, and we have made up in quality what we have lacked in quantity," the matron of Avonside Hospital, Mrs. A. F. Evans, said at the fourth annual presentation of prizes and certificates to assistant nurses which took place in the Coronation Hall at Avonside Hospital on Thursday afternoon. In her annual report for the year, Mrs. Evans said that the training school owed much of its success to the sister tutor, Miss E. H. Hodsoll, and the ward sisters. She expressed her thanks to Miss Abbott "for her work behind the scenes."

Representatives of residents of the new Four Pools estate in Evesham met a solicitor last night to brief him over their plans to stop the opening of the spine road across the estate from Broadway Road to Cheltenham Road. The residents have set up an action committee to stop the opening of the road, which they fear will become a by-pass for heavy lorries avoiding the town centre. A petition containing about 380 signatures, which was handed in to Wychavon early in October, resulted in the council fixing a public meeting at Evesham High School on November 20 for both sides to air their views.
