On Sunday evening about nine o'clock some visitors had been boating on the Avon at Fladbury, and a lady when attempting to alight from the boat stepped into the water owing to the intense darkness. The depth of the water was considerable and she failed to touch the bottom. Her terrified companions struck a light and saw her rise. With difficulty she was pulled out and walked to her lodging, which was in the village. We hear she is none the worse for the immersion; but it should be a warning to pleasure seekers not to stay on the river until such darkness is set in.

A garden fete in aid of the choir treat fund and other objects connected with the church, was held in the grounds of Hampton Vicarage on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, the weather was unfavourable, rain falling during the greater part of the afternoon, and this naturally adversely affected the attendance. Despite the somewhat depressing conditions, however, there was a small crowd at the opening ceremony and a larger attendance later in the afternoon.

Carnival time is with us again and with it there comes the opportunity for all to pause for a moment from the toil of each day and appreciate the beauty and gaiety of one's own town. This year the Carnival Committee support three definite beliefs: they believe Evesham is the sort of town which lends itself especially well for a carnival; they believe Evesham people are the sort who are entitled to expect a carnival each year, and they believe that by donating the funds equally between the Grand Stand Fund and the Electrical Equipment Fund they will be contributing to two major projects, the fulfilment of which will greatest amount of pleasure for the greatest number of people.

Good progress is being made on the conversion of Evesham Baptist school hall into a church. "We are hoping to move into the new church in the middle of October," said the Rev Geoffrey Hagen, the Baptist Minister. The demolition of the old church is due to start at the end of the year and the land leased to the Baptist Housing Association as a site for 47 warden patrolled flats for the elderly. They will cost £68,000 and should be ready for occupation by the summer of 1980.
