ONE lucky youngster will be given the chance to light a 20ft bonfire at one of Worcester's most popular Guy Fawkes celebrations.

The grand 2004 Worcester and Malvern Round Table charity bonfire boasts a dazzling professional fireworks display, which will last half an hour.

The Faithful City's Mayor, Allah Ditta, will help the competition winner light the bonfire, which will be held on Worcester Racecourse, on Saturday, November 6, with gates opening at 6.30pm.

Paul Holmes, a Worcester Round Table member said the night promised to be good fun and should raise between £5,000 and £12,000.

"The bonfire has been a Worcester tradition stretching back 35 years. It's great being involved and making the bonfire, which is much easier since we started to use forklift trucks!" he said.

Only on a couple of occasions have floods stopped the celebrations.

The event will also feature a fairground, as in previous years, which have helped attract crowds of more than 5,000 people.

Traditional refreshments - burger and "roast of the day stalls" - will be on stand-by to ward off the November chill, and the racecourse bar will also be open.

Every single penny of profit raised will be ploughed back into the community through the Round Table's and the Evening News' Making a Difference campaign.

Every month, the MAD campaign donates £1,000 to charities in Worcester and Malvern that are literally making a difference to the lives of people in the community.

It also aims to help those organisations that find it difficult to secure funding from Lottery or state organisations.

Since the campaign was started, the Round Table and the Evening News have distributed £18,000 to worthy causes

Tickets for the bonfire cost £2 for children, £3 for adults, and £10 for a family of four or more.
