Warwick 2, Evesham 1
SATURDAY'S was a disappointing result for the Vale side considering that for most of the game they were the much better side.
"We played them off the pitch really and they've only had a couple of chances yet we've lost the match," said dejected skipper Martin Husbands.
Evesham began positively and created a number of early chances. Smooth passing moves provided opportunities for Mark and Ben Brown but they either missed the target or were denied by the Warwick goalkeeper.
Further chances went begging as Evesham failed to capitalise on their dominance but, with Matt Baumber, Jamie Dodgson and Nick Lloyd controlling the midfield, it only seemed a matter of time before they would take the lead.
Warwick posed a threat along the flanks and their persistence paid off as a counter-attacking move caught the Evesham defence off guard and the resultant goalmouth scramble and poor composure gifted the home side an unlikely lead.
As Evesham tried to press for an equaliser some of their play became ragged but they were still controlling matters. Miles Harris and Stuart Bearcroft posed a constant threat yet, as a team, the visitors' composure in front of goal left something to be desired.
The captain came on for the second half despite a broken hand and equalised when deflecting a quickly taken hit from Chris Perry. Unfortunately, the home side counter attacked instantly and a second mistake gifted back the lead.
It was one-way traffic for the final 20 minutes as Evesham launched attack after attack but they simply lacked the ideas to unlock a congested Warwick defence.
Harris had a goal disallowed, Lloyd hit a fierce shot just past a post and Baumber saw his short corner cleared off the line.
Evesham face league leaders Wedn-esbury at Evesham High School on Saturday (1.30pm).
