WHILE I have some sympathy for Cyril Day when he suggests that the developer of Oakalls, Bromsgrove, should pay for any road improvements at Slideslow Island, I would remind him that the 1,000 households on the estate are probably all taxpayers and contribute a significant amount of Council Tax.

Is he suggesting that the council embark on negotiations with the developer to pay for the urgently needed improvements?

This would inevitably take a long time, and I fear that the horse has probably bolted.

I agree that should have been done when planning permission was sought but it does not appear to have happened and residents of Oakalls are victims of a bureaucratic blunder. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of this, something must be done as a matter of urgency.

Surely, in the short term, a crossing attendant could be appointed for school children, or is it felt that it would be too dangerous for anyone to try to halt the traffic with a lollipop?

We are faced with a very serious problem and pedestrians take their lives in their hands on a daily basis.

Bromsgrove District Council appears to be procrastinating about these improvements in any event and I fear that there will be further accidents before they will do anything.

Let us hope that it does not come to this.
