IN response to L Spiteri (You Say, Wednesday, September 29), first of all, I would like to point out that there is another world power whose stated aim is to become the world superpower. This is China.

Secondly, regarding UK jobs being relocated to EU countries, Cosworth's was only one example of the many British companies where this has happened.

Sadly, this phenomenon has affected a lot of UK companies, including Royal Worcester, Massey Ferguson and others.

I was under the impression that being in Europe meant working together to create a prosperous, caring United States of European Nations. Obviously, I was mistaken.

Next, Jaguar is not transferring production abroad, it's moving from Coventry to other UK sites.

Neither will 1,100 jobs be shed as many of the current workforce will be able to transfer.

Unpopular

Finally, while the Tories did have some unpopular policies, one cannot ignore the fact they were successful in attracting a great deal of inward investment.

Many foreign companies, particularly, Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Toshiba, all built large manufacturing plants in this country, some of which still provide many thousands of quality jobs.

This is in direct contrast to the present government which is complacently presiding over the unprecedented decline in British manufacturing capacity.

Other countries protect and nurture their industries. This country doesn't even try to provide a level playing field.

It's a pity L Spiteri doesn't check his facts and figures before putting pen to paper. The Tories were in power from 1979 to 1997. This doesn't make 20 years.

N WINTER, Worcester.
