AGE proves no obstacle to a keep-fit fanatic from Oakenshaw South, who celebrated her 90th birthday recently.
After an exercise class, Helen Phillips, of Towbury Close, was treated to a surprise meal, flowers and given a birthday cake made by catering students at Redditch's NEW college, where she attends an over-50s keep-fit class every week.
Mrs Phillips, once a member of the Birmingham Athletic Institution, said she had always been active, enjoying in particular dancing, yoga and long walks.
"I used to live near the Lickey Hills and loved to walk miles and miles," she said.
Keep-fit teacher Margot Davies said Helen was attending the class at the Peakman Street college long before she began teaching there, eight years ago.
She said: "Helen's an active participant - you never see her sitting down or dropping out.
"She's wonderful advertisement for keeping fit and really shows the benefits of exercise."
Mrs Phillips enjoyed a well-earned rest on her birthday when family journeyed to spend the day with her at her home in Redditch.
