I HAVE read through your columns over the months concerning the Speed Enforcement debate and the various letters sent in from your readers.
But after reading the letter from F L A Farmer, I felt compelled to write.
He seems to think that we shouldn't be fined if there is a technical infringement. I find it wholly appalling that he does not dispute that we have exceeded the speed limit, but he thinks that we should not be prosecuted because the camera sign was not in the right place.
He needs to get his priorities right here. The most fundamental point in speed enforcement and reduction is the saving of lives, nothing more, nothing less.
We should all be grateful for the hard work that has gone into making our roads safer. It should make no difference that just because the enforcement vehicle is parked in the wrong place, not displaying the correct signage, the driver's window is down or the sky is blue - if you speed you will get caught, end of story.
If you don't want to get caught don't speed, and it's as simple as that. No shades of grey here, just plain old-fashioned black and white. No excuses, speed - fine, speed - fine, speed - fine. Get the picture?
After all, it's not that difficult is it? Because of political correctness, we are now told in advance of the intended speed enforcement sites on the radio, the internet and in the newspaper.
The cameras and vans must be highly visible and stand out so that we can see them. On New Road they have even put up a speed indicator sign just in case you still want to get caught! If you are stupid enough to get caught even after all this, why are you driving at all?
Just ponder this thought for a moment. There are actually people driving around in charge of potentially lethal pieces of machinery totally oblivious to their surroundings.
