I would thank Coun Roger Hall-Jones and his fellow councillors for raising the issue of the car park at Great Malvern station with Worcestershire County Council, and his kind response (Your Letters, October 15) to my letter on the subject.
However, having read the council's response to the criticism of its half-witted scheme I would suggest Roger takes this further as some very serious issues are raised.
Exactly who identified the need for the re-modelling of the car park in the first place? It is obvious from the statement made by the council spokesperson that neither she nor Halcrow know where Malvern is, let alone the use and usage of the car park. How can any public body undertake to spend tens of thousands of pounds of public money without a thorough study of the needs of the local community?
Why, when the council employ a number of qualified and able civil engineers, is it necessary to engage a contractor to design something as basic as a car park? It's hardly the Hanging Gardens of Babylon or the Pyramids!
How much is it going to cost Council Tax-payers for this original debacle, and how many attempts will Halcrow get to come up with a sensible design?
Who deemed it an integral part of the plan that provision be made for three bus spaces? Malvern people haven't seen three buses together on the same day since the day that war broke out. Again, a lack of local knowledge!
Roger Hall-Jones' final point has a great deal of merit. At the end of the day, there are just too many people with their fingers in the Council Tax-payers' wallet for sensible and effective local government.
Terry Ford, Clerkenwell Crescent, Malvern.
