I REFER to the letter from Steve Hutchings ('My Right to Roam', Your Letters, October 15) concerning the proposed re-opening of the unused and now indiscernible footpath to the rear of our properties in Redland Road.
As a resident in Redland Road I am obviously concerned at the proposed re-opening of this footpath and ask Mr Hutchings has he actually looked at the "path"?
It is very obvious that this "footpath" is not and has not been used for many, many years. The simple reason for this is most likely that there is a more than adequate route along the pavement in Redland Road that is level, safer, more convenient and the same distance without the need for hiking boots.
There would appear to be little sense in trying to recreate a footpath simply because it used to be there.
I fully support Mr Hutchings' right to use a designated footpath, which is open and unobstructed. However, I fail to see what purpose can be served by trying to use a footpath which can only have been little more than 100 yards long, has fallen into disuse many years ago, is in the middle of a residential and shopping area and no-one really wants to see re-instated.
Can we please let common sense prevail?
CHARMIANE EARL, Redland Mews, Redland Road, Malvern Link.
