Through the drizzle of a grey October afternoon in Hanley Castle, the Catalonian flag flutters proudly in the breeze.

Regular users of the Powick to Upton road will know this is just one of many colourful flags seen flying from the front garden of a roadside cottage every day.

Both flag and home-made flagpole belong to Dave Bradley and his partner Mandi Harris.

"I always wanted to own a flagpole," admitted Mr Bradley, who presents an afternoon radio show for BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I found an old garden umbrella in the shed and thought it could make a pole, so I added it to the top of some scaffolding."

Dave now has a collection of more than 20 flags from around the world, including his prized St George's Cross.

"I don't really think about which flag to put up every day, unless there's a special event," he said.

"The Jamaican one goes up on Bob Marley's birthday and if England are playing sport I always fly our flag, I think we should fly it more and be proud of it."

Mandi said the flags had has generated a lot of interest.

"Passing coach parties guess which flag will be up and our neighbour even places bets on it with his wife," she said.

Dave, who changes the flags every day, come rain, sleet or snow, said: "It's just a bit of fun really and it brightens up the road, especially in the winter."

The couple pick up flags on their travels and would like to have one from every country around the World.

"If anyone has any flags they no longer want, or even a proper flagpole, they could donate to us, that would be great," said Dave.
