MALVERN'S West Gallery Choir, Vital Spark, will be singing at the service of evensong at St James's Church, West Malvern, on Sunday at 6.30pm.
The music will be in the authentic village church-style typical of the period 1720 to 1850, before it was banished by the Victorians who thought it too spontaneous and unruly. The music will be joyful, robust and sung with great energy and warmth.
The settings will include William Jackson's Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, and John Playford's slow melodic version of The Lord's Prayer, written in 1729.
One of the choir's favourite pieces, Psalm 33 by Thomas Clark, first published in 1804, is bound to get the congregation's toes tapping. The Anthem Taken From Psalm 34, by William Knapp, is another of the choir's favourites, sung in a lively style with a tenor solo by Vital Spark's leader John Williams and a treble solo by Julia Davies.
The hymn tunes will be Sagina, Diadem and Tallis's Evening Hymn, and John will teach the congregation Neely Bruce's Millbrook. The retiring collection will be given to Cancer Research and the service will be followed by coffee and biscuits.
