THE National Farmers Union is warning farmers living close to the M5/M50 corridor in Worcestershire and Herefordshire to be on their guard following a spate of arson attacks on farm buildings.

West Mercia Police are investigating a total of 11 possible incidents of arson in the past six weeks, more than half of which took place in the Ombersley area.

In the latest incidents arsonists are believed to have started fires in barns off the A38 in the Holly Green area of Upton-upon-Severn and in Offerton Lane in Hindlip - within hours of each other on Friday, October 15.

Collectively, the fires have destroyed about 1,200 tons of hay, straw and corn and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service have had to use vital manpower to prevent them from spreading.

Each blaze has happened within five minutes' drive of the two motorways and in most cases barns have been attacked.

Other areas where fires have happened include Whittington and Worcester Cattle Market.

"Obviously we're very concerned about these incidents and are working closely with West Mercia Police and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service to raise awareness among the farming community," said NFU West Midlands spokesman Russell Griffin.

"We'd urge farmers to be on their guard and take whatever security measures they are able to in a bid to prevent their buildings being targeted."

Police are appealing for people to report any suspicious incidents, vehicles or persons to them by calling 08457 444888.
