A LEADING member of the body which represents pubs in Worcester said publicans should embrace European-style drinking and apply for 24-hour licences.
But West Mercia police say education campaigns should be put in place to ensure extended drinking does not lead to "alcohol-fuelled crime" if proposed Government legislation comes into force.
John James, of the Licensed Victuallers Association, said solicitors had advised publicans in Worcester to apply for 24-hour licences even if they chose not to use them.
Mr James said: "Publicans want to have a degree of flexibility in their opening hours so we can close when we want if, say, there's a party in a friendly atmosphere and want to continue."
However, the legislation has raised concerns among West Mercia police.
"West Mercia police believes local authorities and other agencies, including the police, must work together to tackle the issue surrounding alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder," said a spokesman.
"Education programmes and other campaigns will need to be available."
