Family and former classmates of Ryan McCoig-Lees attended a touching ceremony to officially open a friendship garden in the nine-year-old's memory at Ledbury Primary School.

Friends from Year 6 joined Ryan's grandmother Margaret Kennedy and his uncles, Jeremy McCoig-Lees and Ian Kennedy, in the garden after school assembly on Friday.

The ceremony was led by Ledbury rector Dr Colin Beevers, who mentioned Ryan's kind and friendly nature and said the garden was round, "like a big hug", with tables and chairs where people could make friends.

Chairman of the school governors, Peter Box, said: "In future years, for children who never knew Ryan, this will be a place where they can come and meet new friends."

Dr Beevers blessed the garden, then Ian Kennedy spoke on behalf of all the family, especially Ryan's older brothers, Matthew and Richard, who could not attend because of university and college commitments.

Ryan, the youngest son of Homend newsagents Martin and Denise McCoig-Lees, died with his parents in the M56 crash last year, while on the way to Manchester Airport in a minibus for a holiday.
