OUTLINE plans for housing on a site currently earmarked for an animal carcass incinerator have been given the go-ahead.
A planning application for seven luxury homes in Popes Lane, Astwood Bank, has now been referred to the Secretary of State for a final decision as it is a departure from the Local Plan.
The site has been at the centre of controversy for more than two years after plans to operate a round-the-clock incinerator were announced, prompting a storm of protest from residents.
In August, the Advertiser revealed the firm behind the incinerator had agreed to sell the land to Shire Developments if planning permission for the houses was gained by December.
A spokesman for Shire Developments said he was pleased Redditch Council's planning committee had agreed to the plans.
He said: "We have to go back for full planning permission but we hope to start work in the middle of next year.
"It will take about two years to complete the development as there are a lot of things we need to do."
He added: "There will be footpaths, a zebra crossing and a roundabout at the top of the road."
