Alcester 20
Old Wheats 0
Alcester moved out of the relegation zone with a comfortable win over basement boys Old Wheats who are still pointless in the Warwickshire One this season.
Played in heavy rain Alcester showed a much-needed 'grunt and grind' up front culminating in Tom Heneghan's well-struck conversion off his first penalty opportunity.
Heneghan was narrowly wide with another opportunity inside the first 10 minutes as the Alcester pack started to gain the upper hand.
With playing conditions worsening due to the weather, both teams were struggling to keep hold of the ball, but it was Alcester who looked more dangerous when they finally laid a hand on it.
Martin Sergeant continued his try-scoring form this season after rounding off a move midway inside the visitors half.
Wheats were down to 14 after a sin binning and Alcester made their numerical advantage count when Heneghan created space for the overlap allowing wing Chris Hall to touch down.
After the break, the Old Wheats had chances to get some points on the board, but with their kicker off form Alcester rounded the scoring off with their third try.
Ball from the line-out spun into midfield and was picked up by Heneghan who broke a tackle and raced under the posts for a trademark score, which he converted himself.
In the Warwickshire 2nds XV Cup, Alcester visited Rugby St Andrews and came away with ten-point victory 26-36.
Alcester scored three tries in each half, with the scores in the first period coming from Sam Vernon, skipper Grant Skidmore and Steve Wade. Rich Smith converted one of the tries to leave Alcester 17-7 ahead at the break.
Second-half scorers were Chico Hack, who converted his own try, a second for Vernon and prop Darren Stanton. Smith added two conversions.
Alcester will either visit Stratford or Broadstreet in the second round.
