A chef who appeared on TV in a Prince's Trust programme had sex with a drunken 14-year-old schoolgirl, Worcester Crown Court heard.

Warren Tonks drank a litre of vodka, four pints of beer and a bottle of cider before the offence.

He, the teenager and two other people went to a Redditch pub together - but on the way home the victim was staggering and clinging to him.

Tonks accompanied her to a hostel in the town where they had sex, said Gareth Walters, prosecuting. He later confessed the crime to his own girlfriend.

In 1996, when he was 17, he was given a police caution for having sex with an under-age girl.

Tonks, 26, of Beoley Road West, Redditch, admitted having unlawful sex.

He was given a three-year community rehabilitation order and ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for five years. He had already served five months in custody on remand.

Tonks' girlfriend reported him to staff at the hostel and police were alerted on May 29.

Michael Aspinall, defending, said his will had been weakened by excessive alcohol.

He had a drink problem but had not taken the girl to the pub just to get her drunk.

Mr Aspinall said he was working at the hostel as a chef and had been featured on TV.

Judge Ian Morris told Tonks: "The purpose of the law is to protect girls from men like you. You had several opportunities when you could have walked away but you didn't."
