BORED young people in the Horsefair and Broadwaters area of Kidderminster will soon have a "place of their own", thanks to a new youth club.

The venture, which is being set up with the help of a £10,000 Worcestershire County Council cash boost, will have sports facilities - including an indoor court - beauty therapy and arts and crafts, as well as an alcohol-free bar.

Aimed at 13-16 year-olds the club, called Active Teams, will run at the Salvation Army's base in Jerusalem Walk.

It has come about thanks to a successful bid put in to the county council by youth workers at the Oldington and Foley Park Community Network.

Kate Foxall, of Wyre Forest Community Housing, which assisted with the bid, said: "Our neighbourhood warden in the Horsefair area noticed there was nothing for the young people to do."

She said this had been worse since an area known as The Cage, where the youngsters met to play football, had been built on.

Mrs Foxall said: "The new youth group will have facilities for indoor football and basketball coaching, as well as beauty therapy and an alcohol-free bar.

"My vision was to give the young people, in what can be a difficult area, a place of their own - somewhere safe to meet up on a regular basis."

She said the eventual aim was that the Wednesday evening club, which would open on December 1, would be run by the young people.

The £10,000 grant has come from a £250,000 pot of money made available for services for people in the 13-19 age group.

Also successful in winning cash was another scheme put forward by the Oldington and Foley Park Community Network - for holiday activities - which won £3,750. Bayton Village Hall and Recreation Group's committee was awarded £2,600 to improve children's facilities.
