IT was with some amazement that I read the letter from Adrian Hardman regarding the Kidderminster Library alterations (Shuttle/Times and News, September 23).

To put the adult lending fiction section in the middle of the reference/study/quiet area of the library seems to me to indicate a lack of thought.

Borrowers, quite rightly, talk and exchange views in the lending area, but this is not what we need in a reference/study area.

I have spoken about this to the reference librarian and it was pointed out to me that a new "quiet" area would be supplied at the other end of the floor, at the bay window area.

I do not understand how this creatively addresses the problem, especially as there are no power points available there, which laptop users require.

If we wish our library to be used by all the community, which includes people like me who value the present study/quiet/research area, I hope the planned alterations will be reviewed.

The imperative pushing through these changes has been explained and I would not dare to suggest it is mainly a financial one, but it certainly has very little to do with giving this town a library where study, research and reference is quietly and effectively delivered.
