A BILL currently going through Parliament has been described by Lord Lucas, in the House of Lords, as "being comparable to Hitler's 'Enabling Act' of March 1933", a Bill that transferred powers from the State to a Party, enabling them to legitimately hijack democracy.

The Civil Contingencies Bill has been described as the most dangerous Bill to come before the House - ever.

The excuse is, unsurprisingly, to counter terrorism and disasters. Yet we had years of IRA terrorism, the Aberfan disaster, rail crashes and the recent floods in Boscastle, Devon, and coped, with no problems, using the present laws.

Lord Lucas said in the House of Lords that this Bill would give the Government enormous powers, including the power to destroy the Constitution, abolish Judges and Parliament (as did Hitler) and confiscate property with or without compensation (as did Hitler).

It would also prevent assemblies such as demonstrations, "misapply" laws and regulations, in other words, ignore any laws they choose.

Similarly, they can make it a criminal offence to criticise Government policy, and many other powers (as did Hitler). This can all be done by any Minister who decides that a State of Emergency exists.

It would mean that even if we voted against the EU Constitution or the euro, this could easily be overridden by the Government, or the Prime Minister himself.

STANLEY D PARR,

Pershore.
