A NEW farm track, breaching the historic boundary wall of Witley Court, could be approved by planners next week.

The gated track would run from the A443 east of Great Witley to the lane serving Great Witley Church, passing through the grounds of Witley Court.

The proposal, drawn up in consultation with highway officers, involves removing a section of the low listed wall of Witley Park and creating a gateway using original materials.

It would provide an alternative access to Witley Park Farm and the applicants say it would improve road safety by diverting vehicles away from access points at Chestnut Lane and Stourport Lodge.

Strongly opposed

No more farm traffic will cross the forecourt of Witley Court and no objection has been raised by English Heritage, which owns the Court.

However, Great Witley Parish Council is strongly opposed to the "unnecessary scarring of a picturesque rural landscape" and to the removal of part of the boundary wall.

Members believe the lane would create an extra traffic hazard and be a blot on the landscape.

Planning officers are recommending the plan for approval, subject to conditions, including the closure of Chestnut Drive to vehicles.

The application will be considered at a planning meeting on Wednesday.
