THIS proved to be yet another close encounter between two teams who had been promoted together last season from Division One.
WELLAND ATHLETIC 1, ALL BLACKS 2
On paper Welland looked to be favourites from recent results but All Blacks' resolve and commitment proved finally to win the day.
In difficult conditions of wind and rain, good football was difficult and all Welland's attacks were thwarted by the outstanding Cole in Blacks' defence.
Even after Welland had taken an undeserved lead on 38 minutes through Lee Manion, it was Cole who popped up to level for All Blacks just before half time.
Welland's intent for patient build-up play was destroyed by both the weather and their opponents' aggression and it was no surprise when a ball, not cleared from Welland's defence, was struck well from 20 yards to give All Blacks the lead.
Chris Postens and Chris Broadbent both worked hard for Welland, as did Ben Nineham in midfield, but on the day it was a fair result.
Welland, sponsored by Kings Head, Upton, are away to Perrywood in the Bayliss Cup tomorrow (Saturday), kick off 2.30pm.
