AS the golfing season draws to a close, club members frequently reflect on their achievements or failures during the playing season.
One of the sections of The Worcestershire Golf Club, where the achievements have been of a high order, is in the junior section. Their enthusiasm and golfing talent has been much to the fore and many great performances have taken place during the year.
In the most recent eight hole medal competition, 14-year-old Richard Tuck won the competition with an excellent round. Richard's performance was equalled by nine-year-old Elliot Hennessey, who won the junior mini-medal competition held on the same day.
The final of the junior matchplay knockout competition has now taken place and two excellent rounds were played by the 17-year-olds, Matt Pugh and the junior captain Steven Lane. Matt now has a handicap of three and Steven plays off a handicap of two.
Competition between these two adversaries was keen throughout the final and they approached the 18th hole all square. Matt however made an incredible 40 foot uphill putt on the final green to beat Steven by one hole.
Steven's sister Vicky has also enjoyed an incredible season. She has won the club's Rosebowl competition partnered by her father Colin; won the Bronze Division of the Ladies' Scratch Cup and has played for the Worcestershire County Girls' team.
Members saddled with high office at the club frequently see their golf suffering as a result of their administrative duties. This charge can not be levelled against club director and competitions chairman, Andy Davis.
Andy has played good golf throughout the season and this has continued with him winning Division One of the mid-week Stableford competition. Andy was in great form returning the high score of 40 points, two points better than Charles Colthart, who came second. Dave Butler was third with 37 points.
Andrew Thomas led Division Two with 37 points. Members were pleased to see the return of Mickey Downes, who has been away from the club due to long-term injury. A talented golfer, Mickey came second with a score of 34 points. Mike Frechette was third.
Scoring was difficult in the Ladies' Stableford Competition and the inclement weather made sure good scores would be at a premium.
In Division One, Jill Piner had the same score as Jenny Simms, but in that she had the better back nine hole score, Jill was declared the winner. Veronica Shaw was third.
Judy Colliver returned the best score of the day to win Division Two with Barbara Wilkinson second and Corrine Mills third.
Jenny Butler was the clear winner in Division Three. Jenny was five points better than April Wilding, who came second and eight points better than Jill Mico, who was third.
The Seniors' team was comfortable winners by five games to three in their home match against Sapey. Acting captain Barry Fletcher has struck a great run of form to lead the team to yet another victory. Barry, partnered by Jeff Jones, won his game by two and one. There were also wins for Paul Hothersall and Keith Derret; Braz Pereira and Simon Porter; Peter Taylor and Gordon Emery and the strong partnership of David Mackie paired with Brian Vincent.
