IN Division Three of the Brewin Dolphin Malvern Table Tennis League, the Manor Park Allsorts team captain had hoped that his young and improving team would get at least a point from their match with Dukes Way Dynamos.
However, he had not reckoned on how much the opposition had also improved.
Vivien Tolley played particularly well and was supported by Ian Sage and Charlie Burford. Trish Gorton was the Allsorts best player and she took a game from both Vivien and Charlie but lost 8-11 in both the fourth games.
Roy Holland won two for Abbeydowne and Peter Denniss won one and was unlucky not to win another when he lost 9-11 in the fifth to Steve Mulka. Alan Holmes for X-Police had a long game with Len Hitchman eventually winning 26-24 and his second game against Roy Holland went to 14-16. All the Police team of Alan, Ralph Cook and Steve Mulka won two sets and Alan and Ralph won the doubles.
When Manor Park Crackpots visited Uckinghall the match could have been won by either team and a very long evening lasted till 11.30pm.
Richard Cullis of Crackpots won the first set against Peter Quy in three games and then Pete Nash and Roger Davies won the next two for Uckinghall in four games before Richard beat Pete Nash in five games.
In the next set Peter Quy beat Ed Palmer but only by 12-10 in the fourth game and then Roger needed five games to win against Stan Ginn. With Uckinghall 4-2, up the doubles were crucial and the scoreline of 8-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 in the home team's favour reflects the tightness of play.
With still a draw possible Ed next beat Pete Nash 9-11, 10-12, 12-10. 11-8, 11-9 and Richard won his third singles of the evening by 14-12 in the fourth game.
Peter Quy and Stan Ginn then had the final set to decide who took the fourth point from the match.
Peter won the first two games by five and 10 but Stan won the third to eight and in the fourth game Peter won 12-10 giving his team the three point win.
RESULTS: Manor Park Allsorts 0, Dukes Way Dynamos 10; Abbeydowne 3, X-Police 7; Uckinghall 6, Manor Park Crackpots 4.
