MALVERN Town progressed to the second round of the FA Vase with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over North Counties East opponents Staveley MW and earned a home tie with either Coventry Sphinx or Ludlow Town.

MALVERN TOWN 4, STAVELEY MINERS WELFARE FC 1

Malvern started strongly and in the 10th minute a Duncan Preedy header was collected by Staveley goalkeeper Joel Armstrong. Five minutes later Duncan turned provider and his cross found Scott Morris, who headed just wide of the post.

Four minutes later a good through ball was played to Morris but his shot went wide and in the 25th minute a pin-point cross from Darren Bullock found Morris, who tried to chip the advancing keeper but he got his fingers to it.

Staveley's first only real shot of the first half came a minute later when Shaun Hayes shot just wide from 25 yards. Back came Malvern and in the 29th minute Morris sent over a good cross to Phil Preedy but his header hit a defender and went clear. A minute later Duncan Preedy crossed from the right but Morris was slipping as he headed the ball and it went tamely wide.

In the 34th minute Rikki Halion received the ball on the left wing and his shot-cum-cross went just over the bar. In the 40th minute a well-struck long-range effort from Bullock was saved by Armstrong and a minute later another shot by Halion went just wide.

Malvern started the second half the same as the first but this time they had a lucky break as in the 47th minute another Bullock piledriver struck Morris and deflected into the opposite side of the net with the keeper stranded.

Six minutes later it was 2-0 when another fine Duncan cross found Morris unmarked and his header went in off the inside of the post. Morris completed his hat-trick in the 63rd minute when he headed home from a Preedy corner.

Two minutes later two good saves in a minute from Armstrong prevented the home side increasing their lead.

In the 70th minute an innocent ball was played into the Malvern area and struck Craig Heaney on the back of the head and into the net, with Paul Wyatt in the Malvern goal stranded.

Malvern then kept possession without creating any chances until the 85th minute when a free kick was played to Morris but his shot was turned round the post by Armstrong. From the resulting corner Halion headed home for 4-1.
