ADAM Webster is prepared to sacrifice a striking role to secure a first team place.
The Worcester City stalwart, second top scorer with 16 goals last season, is desperate to play, even if it isn't in his preferred position.
Webster, Mark Owen, Leon Kelly and Stewart Hadley are all vying for the front roles but after successfully operating in right midfield in recent matches Webster has proved he has added another string to his bow.
Manager John Barton has been sufficiently impressed and with Pat Lyons unlikely to be fit for next Saturday's league opener against Havant & Waterlooville, Webster could well find himself starting the season at right midfield.
The 23-year-old has no qualms about playing there and is rising to the different challenge it offers.
"I played there at Quorn and against Wolves and it feels quite comfortable," he said.
"It's different with the emphasis on running up and down and tracking back rather than the side to side movement of attack but I'm enjoying it and I just want to be part of the team.
"It's a new challenge. I've never played there before and haven't played in midfield since I was nine but I'll make a go of it."
Webster was full of praise for new team-mate Leon Kelly and believes he will be a strong asset for City up front. "He's pacy, can take the knocks and proved against Wolves that he can finish," added Webster.
Webster's ability to adapt has fostered more competition for places and earned praise from Barton.
"I've been pleased with him and he showed both against Quorn and for near enough 90 minutes against Wolves that he's another option in that position for us, which means more competition which is what we are striving for," he said.
"Certainly Adam brings qualities to that role and will work hard for us while still getting himself into goalscoring positions from the opposite side as he showed against Wolves when he had two or three chances."
Webster limped out of action towards the end of the Wolves friendly but reported it as nothing more than a touch of cramp and is expecting to be available for Worcester City's final friendly at Stourport Swifts on Monday (7.45).
