ORGANISERS of a community transport scheme are appealing for volunteers to sit behind the wheel and help rural residents to reach special events.

Worcestershire County Council is looking for more drivers for its ShareLINK scheme, which helps organisations share their vehicles so other community groups and charities can take advantage of them for trips when they are not being used.

The scheme allows the elderly, disabled, youngsters and people on a low income to access services across the county and beyond.

It also allows the organisations sharing their vehicle to make a small amount of income when their vehicle is not otherwise being used.

The scheme is now well-established and a healthy network of vehicles has been created. However, drivers are harder to come by.

Vehicle sharing officer Chris Atkinson said they would need volunteers to work on an occasional basis.

"It's completely up to the driver to choose how often they drive - it could be as little as two or three times a year.

"As well as helping a wide variety of people, most volunteers find their contribution personally rewarding."

Visits to the seaside, country parks and garden parties are among those trips previously organised under the scheme.

Training, expenses and suitable attire are provided for volunteers under the scheme.
