POLICE are hoping new powers to stamp out antisocial behaviour will stop people setting off fireworks in estate shopping centres.
Antisocial dispersal orders, which allow police to disperse gangs and escort loitering youngsters home, were introduced in Church Hill Centre and Matchborough Centre on Friday. They will operate for the next six months.
Sgt Neil Billingham said: "As we were applying for the orders there were several incidents reported on the same night in Church Hill Centre with fireworks being set off.
"On the whole the two centres have remained fairly quiet over the past few months and the orders have been put in place for the winter months as the centres can become a favourite place for youths to hang around.
"Also with Bonfire Night approaching and an increased use of fireworks in the run-up to it and afterwards, we're hoping the order will stop people setting off fireworks."
Sgt Billingham said they would be carrying out high-profile patrols and vehicle checks over the next few months.
