THROUGH the pages of your newspaper I would like to encourage the local community to support this year's Poppy Appeal.
In 2003, the Poppy Appeal raised another record collection, totalling £21,697,387, thanks to the public support for the work of the Royal British Legion in helping the ex-service community.
The Poppy Appeal's success is reflected in the fact that our local community has continued to provide assistance to the Royal British Legion's fundraising, whether by volunteering time or generously donating to their cause.
The demand on the Legion's resources continues to grow, not least because of the continuing conflict in Iraq. The Poppy Appeal is as relevant today as it ever was and the Legion is there to help those in need in our ex-service community and their dependants.
Earlier this year we witnessed the 60th anniversary of D-Day which served to remind the public that the Legion's help extends equally to the young and the old wherever the need arises. I would urge our local community to support this excellent cause.
CLLR JULIET SHORT, Chairman, Stratford District Council.
