In this month's Parish Magazine for St Peter's, Bengeworth, the editor opposes in no uncertain manner the scheme which has been prepared with great care and which, we understand, has received the sanction of the Governors of the Grammar School and Deacle's School, for the amalgamation of the two with the object of providing a really good and properly equipped secondary school for Evesham and the neighbourhood. We have not the scheme before us and therefore are not in a position to discuss the points raised by the writer, but no doubt before long the burgesses as a whole will have an opportunity of perusing and studying the proposals.

The excellent work being accomplished by the Orphan Fund Committee of the National Union of Railwaymen was outlined at a social evening at the club room of the Vauxhall Inn, Evesham, on Saturday evening. The function was organised by the Evesham branch committee for the purpose of presenting their secretary, Mr J V Aldridge, with a gold medallion for services rendered. Mr Frank Taylor, who presided, said all present would agree that Mr Aldridge was a worker who over came all obstacles in the interest of the Orphan Fund and trade unionism generally.

Despite proposed Government spending cutbacks, Evesham's long-awaited bypass will not be a victim of the economic axe, now or even in the future. This promise was given by Michael Spicer, MP for South Worcestershire, at a meeting in the town on Saturday, to representatives of organisations interested in the by-pass. Suggested routes for the bypass are to be published next year and consultations would begin shortly after that. It was hoped that work would start by the mid-1980s. Mr. Spicer said: "Having talked directly to Ministers from the last government and to this government, they have no doubt that the bypass is an absolute priority. Whatever cuts may come in the future, I am convinced that they will not affect the Evesham bypass."
