LES Arnott's latest letter from UKIP (You Say, Saturday, October 16) about the EU was riddled with many inaccuracies. In the interests of space I shall just correct two.
EU laws do not come as diktats from Brussels, "steamrollering" over national Governments - they are agreed collectively by Member States, with the UK almost always siding with the majority.
That may not make them good laws. It does, however, make them democratic.
Members of the European Parliament are not "puppets of the Commission".
The fact that President-elect Barroso chose to withdraw any vote of approval by MEPs for the proposed new Commission so that he could make changes shows he knew well that he would have lost the vote.
Parliament has very significant powers. Whether these powers are used wisely is a different issue.
PHILIP BUSHILL-MATTHEWS,
MEP European Parliament, Strasbourg (and Conservative Office, Sansome Place, Worcester).
