Board three saw Geoffrey Herbert played an unorthodox variation against black's Sicilian Defence. He cramped his opponent on the queen's side and used his extra spaced and central control to win a pawn.

Black used a lot of time holding off the attack but eventually Geoffrey penetrated with a rook and was able to force mate with a sacrifice.

On board four, Maurice Ginger played the Petroff Defence but left white with a commanding queen position after exchanging a pair of bishops. Maurice won material but this seriously weakened his king's side allowing white to give up the exchange for a strong attack. Time pressure prevented white from finding the killer blow and a draw was agreed.

Denis Spencer played the London system against black's Kings Indian and both players castled on the king's side on board five. Black lost a piece after a premature pawn advance and Denis the won the exchange. Denis then obtained an overwhelming positional superiority and black soon resigned.

In a King's pawn opening on board six, white developed aggressively, Tony Shaw castled on the Queen's side but he opened the queen's bishop's file and this led to an attack on his king. White gradually built up the pressure forcing Tony's resignation.
